Trial Lesson

Not Sure Where to Start? A Trial Lesson Gives You Another Way to Begin

Visit Blue House Before You Choose Your Japanese Class

Maybe you are ready to start learning Japanese, but you are still trying to figure out which class would feel right for you. If you have studied before, you may also be wondering where your current Japanese fits and whether you really need to start from the beginning.

A Trial Lesson gives you a chance to visit Blue House, see the school for yourself, and talk with us about where you may want to start. You do not have to make a decision before you come.

If you already know which Japanese class you want to take, that is fine too. A Trial Lesson is optional, and you can enroll directly when you are ready.

On This Page

A Trial Lesson Is an Option — Not a Requirement

Some students want to visit first because they are still comparing levels or learning options. Others already know exactly where they want to begin and are ready to enroll without taking an extra step.

The Trial Lesson is there for the first group. It gives you another way to get a feel for Blue House and talk through your options before choosing a class.

If you already know where you want to begin, you can go straight to the class list instead. Find the class that fits how you want to learn, and choose the next step that makes sense for you.

Use Your Visit to Get a Clearer Idea of Where to Start

If you have studied Japanese before, you do not automatically have to start over. You can compare the level information with what you already understand, use the level check as another reference, and then talk with us about where your Japanese may fit.

If you are completely new to Japanese, the starting point is much simpler: Beginners 1 Class. You can begin from zero without worrying about what you were supposed to learn before you came.

The Trial Lesson gives you a chance to make that decision with a little more context. Instead of choosing only from a page on a screen, you can visit the school, ask questions, and leave with a clearer picture of what your next step could look like.

If you have studied Japanese before and want to compare the actual levels first:

If you are completely new to Japanese:

Check the Price and Available Time Before You Book

The Trial Lesson is ¥2,200.

Current booking options are shown on the Trial Lesson booking page, so you can check the available dates and times before you reserve.

If you want to visit Blue House and get a better idea of where to start before enrolling, choose the available option that works for you. If you already know which class fits your goal, level, and schedule, you can skip the Trial Lesson and enroll directly instead.

Before completing your reservation, review the information shown for the booking option you selected.

After You Book, Here Is How to Get Ready

The classroom opens for the Trial Lesson 10 minutes before the lesson start time, so you do not need to arrive far in advance.

Blue House Okinawa is located by the seawall near Gate 1 of Kadena, and this Trial Lesson page can include the approved current map to help you plan your visit.

Parking

Please park by the seawall rather than on the street by Blue House Okinawa. The walk from the seawall to the school only takes a few minutes, but giving yourself a little extra time makes the arrival much easier.

What to Bring

Bring a notebook and pens you feel comfortable using. Beyond that, the most important thing is simply to come ready to see what learning Japanese at Blue House feels like.

Looking forward to seeing you.

If you want more detailed information about parking, access, or other practical questions:

After the Trial Lesson, the Choice Is Still Yours

Taking a Trial Lesson does not mean you have already decided to enroll. After your visit, you can look at the class options again with a better idea of what feels right for your level, goal, pace, and schedule.

You may leave knowing exactly which class you want to take, or you may want to compare the options once more before deciding. Either response is fine; the purpose of the Trial Lesson is to help you make the next choice with more information, not to make the choice for you.

Start with the class that matches your goal, pace, and schedule. When you are ready, choose your Japanese class and continue with the enrollment process.

Already know which class you want?

Want to Visit Blue House First?

You do not have to have your whole Japanese-learning plan figured out before you visit. If seeing the school and talking through your options would help you decide where to begin, a Trial Lesson gives you that chance.

If you already know which Japanese class you want, you can go directly to the class options instead. Either way, you can choose the next step that fits where you are now.

Blue House Okinawa is located near Sunabe Seawall, close to Kadena Air Base Gate 1.

Beginners Guidance

You Do Not Have to Figure Out the Whole Learning Path Before You Begin

There Is a Place to Start, Even with Zero Japanese

You do not need to know Japanese before you begin. Beginners 1 Class is the starting point for complete beginners.

If you are looking at Hiragana, grammar, speaking, textbooks, apps, and different class options and wondering what you are supposed to do first, you do not need to solve all of that before you start.

There is a clear place to begin.

On This Page

What Am I Supposed to Learn First?

Hiragana? Grammar? Speaking? An app or a textbook?

When you are completely new to Japanese, it can feel as if there are too many things you are supposed to understand before you can even begin.

You do not have to figure out the whole learning path on your own. Beginners 1 gives you a clear place to start, with pronunciation, greetings, Hiragana, and simple Japanese.

If you want to see exactly what Beginners 1 includes:

What If I Freeze or Don’t Know What to Say?

Sometimes the Japanese does not come right away, or the answer you hear is different from what you practiced.

That does not mean you need to know more before you begin. Slow down, pick out what you know, and start from there. If you miss something, ask again. If you are not sure you said what you meant, check it and get feedback.

Learning Japanese is not only about understanding an answer when you see it. Part of learning is gradually becoming more comfortable recalling what you know, trying it, checking it, and using it again.

If you want to see how that process works across the Blue House learning system:

When Does Japanese Start Feeling Useful?

Japanese may start to feel different when a sign or a line on a menu that used to look unfamiliar suddenly has a word you recognize.

It might be something very small. You notice a word you have studied, understand part of something you hear, or remember a phrase when you actually need it.

Those small moments matter because Japanese begins to feel connected to the life you are already living in Okinawa, rather than staying only inside a textbook or class.

You do not have to wait until you can hold a long conversation before your Japanese starts becoming useful.

Fixed

Same scheduled days and times. The lesson quantity is set by the plan. Best for a regular weekly routine. Missed lessons cannot be made up.

Flex

If you are still deciding between courses or lesson styles, you do not have to choose Fixed or Flex yet.

Fixed Schedule

A Steady Routine for Steady Progress

At Blue House Okinawa, the Fixed Schedule Class offers a simple, dependable way to study Japanese: attend class on the same days and times every week. This clear structure helps you stay consistent, build lasting habits, and make real progress—without having to plan or rebook every time.

Why Choose Fixed?

  1. Build Strong Study Habits
With lessons set on fixed days and times, studying becomes part of your weekly rhythm. No need to figure out when to study—your class is already on your calendar. This makes it easier to stay committed and consistent.

  2. Stay on Track and Learn Faster
Regular, predictable lessons help you move forward steadily. Each session builds on the last, making it easier to retain what you’ve learned and stay motivated as your skills grow.

  3. Stay Motivated with Classmates
Sharing a fixed schedule means progressing alongside the same group of classmates. This consistency encourages deeper connections, active participation, and a sense of belonging in your learning community.

  4. Improve Speaking and Listening Naturally
Frequent, real-time practice helps sharpen your speaking and listening skills faster. Regular feedback and interactive communication reinforce what you’ve learned and make it easier to use Japanese confidently.

  5. More Value for Your Investment
Fixed Schedule Classes are more cost-effective than paying for lessons one at a time. You’ll receive high-quality instruction at a better rate—ideal for those who can commit to regular attendance.

  1. Flexibility When You Need It
Even with a fixed schedule, you’re not stuck. If your routine changes, you can easily switch to a flexible plan at any time, adjusting your learning path to fit your life.

How It Works

  • Choose a class time that fits your routine.
  • Attend on the same day and time each week.
  • No need to reschedule or rebook—just show up and keep learning.

Flex Schedule

Take Available Japanese Classes. Build Your Own Schedule.

Flex gives you more control over when, how often, and which available Japanese classes you attend.

Flex can therefore work for someone who only wants a few lessons — or someone who wants Japanese to become a major part of a short stay.

Flex 4 — Learn Japanese on Your Schedule

Keep Japanese Going Without a Fixed Weekly Commitment

Busy with unpredictable work hours, family commitments, travel, or an ever-changing schedule?

Flex 4 gives you four lesson coupons over a four-week subscription period, making it possible to keep studying without reserving the same class time every week.

One simple way to use Flex 4 is approximately one lesson per week.

Flex 4 Can Work Well If You Want To

  • Fit Japanese around work or family plans
  • Study about once a week
  • Avoid being tied to one fixed time
  • Continue from where you left off
  • Focus on the Japanese you currently need
  • Get instructor support while keeping your schedule manageable

One Possible Flex 4 Rhythm

Week 1
Example: 1 lesson

Week 2
Example: 1 lesson

Week 3
Example: 1 lesson

Week 4
Example: 1 lesson

You do not have to use your four coupons in this exact pattern.

If one week is busy, you can arrange the lessons differently within the subscription period, subject to availability and the booking rules.

Want to see how Self-Paced can work when your schedule changes from week to week?

Flex 32 — Learn the Most, Learn the Fastest

Make Japanese a Major Part of Your Time in Okinawa

Flex can also be used in the opposite way.

Flex 32 gives you 32 lesson coupons over a four-week subscription period, allowing you to build a high-frequency schedule from Japanese classes available during your subscription period.

One Possible 4-Week Schedule

Daytime
Example: 1 available lesson

Evening
Example: 1 available lesson

Frequency
Example: 4 days per week

4-Week Total
Example: 32 lessons

Another possible approach is to concentrate more of the lessons into a shorter period, depending on availability.

With Flex 32, You Can Potentially

  • Take more than one lesson in a day
  • Combine daytime and evening classes
  • Use Self-Paced lessons for your own curriculum
  • Add available Conversation lessons for more speaking
  • Join available Lecture or Intensive-Lecture lessons for instructor-led structure
  • Receive instructor support at a much higher frequency
  • Build a concentrated period of Japanese study during your stay in Okinawa

Flex 32 is not a separate learning style.

It is still Flex — just with a much larger number of lessons available to schedule.

Flex 32 or 1-Month Intensive?

Flex 32 gives you more control over which available lessons you book and how you distribute them.

The 1-Month Intensive follows a fixed Monday–Thursday class schedule for Beginners 1 or Conversation 1.

Use What You Learn Outside the Lesson

Choosing your schedule is only one part of learning Japanese at Blue House.

The Japanese you study can also move beyond the textbook and class.

Language Exchange gives you a place to take Japanese you have prepared and try using it in a real conversation with other learners.

You may hear an answer you did not expect, notice where you hesitate, or discover a word or expression you want to learn next.

If speaking itself is your main priority:

Which Option Fits You?

Fixed and Flex solve different scheduling needs.

Why Choose One Focused Month?

Studying four days a week gives Japanese a regular place in your life for one focused month.

With only a short gap between lessons, what you studied the day before is still fresh when you return. That gives you repeated chances to learn, practice, ask questions, hear the Japanese again, and try it one more time.

The four-week format also gives the course a clear beginning and end, so you know exactly what you are committing to.

Four weeks. Four lessons a week. Sixteen lessons to keep building.

The goal is not to become fluent in one month. It is to give Japanese your attention for one concentrated period and allow the language to become more familiar through regular practice.

Choose Your Intensive Class

There are two Intensive routes, depending on what you want to focus on during your month.

Choose Intensive Beginners 1 if you want to…

  • Start Japanese from zero with a structured curriculum.
  • Learn Hiragana, basic grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking.

Choose Intensive Conversation 1 if you want to…

  • Focus mainly on practical speaking and pronunciation.
  • Learn without required homework or pre-study.

How Intensive Beginners 1 Works

STEP 1 — At Home, On Your Own Time

Learning continues between classes, but you can work through the home-study activities on your own time.

Because Intensive meets four days a week, what you review at home can come back into class quickly rather than sitting untouched for several days.

Lecture Videos On-Demand
Pause, rewind, and watch lessons as often as you need.

Workbook Practice
Strengthen your writing and typing skills and work with the Japanese from your lesson.

Digital Flashcards
Review vocabulary on your phone and bring new words back from memory.

Online Lesson Quizzes
Check what you remember and retake quizzes when you need more practice.

Create Your Own Q&A
Prepare questions and answers connected to your own life.

School Social Media
Practice writing Japanese while interacting with other learners.

Prepare for Language Exchange
Get ready to use some of the Japanese you are learning with another person.

STEP 2 — Bring It Back to Class

The Japanese you studied at home comes back into class while it is still fresh.

Class gives you a place to ask questions, clear up confusion, check your grammar and pronunciation, and practice saying what you prepared out loud.

Instead of only completing study materials, you can find out whether the Japanese works when you actually try to say it.

In Class, You Can:

  • Ask questions about what you studied.
  • Check grammar and pronunciation.
  • Practice saying your own questions and answers.
  • Get feedback from your instructor.
  • Try again when something does not sound right.

STEP 3 — Try It in Language Exchange

Japanese feels different when another person answers you.

Language Exchange gives you a chance to take some of the Japanese you have studied and practiced and use it with Japanese students who are learning English too.

You may understand the whole answer or only part of it. Either way, the conversation shows you what you can already use and what you may want to practice next.

There is no required homework or pre-study, so the month works differently from Beginners 1. You come to class, work with the Japanese provided in the lesson, practice the sounds, and begin speaking.

Program Details

  • Duration: 1 month
  • Frequency: 4 lessons per week
  • Lesson Style: Intensive-Lecture
  • Focus: Practical speaking, pronunciation, listening, and everyday expressions
  • Required Homework: None

This Class May Fit You If...

  • Practical speaking is your main priority.
  • You want Japanese class four days a week for one month.
  • You do not want required homework or pre-study.
  • Frequent class time helps you build speaking momentum.
  • You want Japanese to become a bigger part of a short stay in Okinawa.

What Conversation Intensive Feels Like

Conversation 1 does not follow the same home-study path as Beginners 1.

The lesson already gives you a situation and Japanese to work with, so you do not need to arrive with a topic prepared.

Class may include practical Japanese for restaurants, shopping, transportation, business hours, greetings, or other simple everyday situations.

You listen, practice the sounds, work with useful expressions, and try saying the Japanese yourself.

Make Japanese Part of Your Month in Okinawa

You do not need to become fluent in one month for the experience to matter.

After four weeks of regular classes, Japanese that once sounded like one long stream may begin to break into words you recognize. A phrase from class may suddenly sound familiar at a restaurant, a question at a store may become a little easier to understand, or you may find yourself saying something that would not have come out when you first started.

These may feel like small changes, but they are the beginning of Japanese becoming part of your everyday life in Okinawa.

One focused month gives you time to learn, practice, notice Japanese around you, and come back to class to keep building from there.

Your month in Okinawa can become the month Japanese starts feeling like something you can actually use.

Still not sure which direction fits you?

When a Regular Class Pace Does Not Fit Your Life

Self-Paced was created around problems students were actually having.

Some students missed a class because work became busy and then felt like the rest of the class had moved ahead.

Others did not fully understand something but hesitated to ask more questions because everyone else was ready to continue.

Self-Paced gives you another way to learn.

You can continue from where you are instead of feeling pressured to keep up with someone else’s pace.

Move Through Japanese at Your Own Pace

In Self-Paced, you work through structured Japanese course material according to your own progress.

That means you can spend more time on something difficult and move forward when you are ready.

One week, you may have more time to study at home and use class for conversation and pronunciation.

Another week, you may be busy and need to use more of your class time for study and questions.

Your learning can adjust when your life changes.

Study at Home. Bring What You Need into Class.

Self-Paced connects home study with instructor support in class.

At Home

Your Self-Paced study can include:

  • Lecture videos
  • Workbook practice
  • Digital flashcards
  • Online lesson quizzes
  • Preparing your own questions and answers
  • Writing and interacting through the school community
  • Preparing for Language Exchange

These activities give you time to review, repeat, and prepare outside class at your own pace.

Hear from Students

Since arriving in Okinawa, Blue House has been an extremely friendly and encouraging environment to begin learning Japanese! The evening classes have been a perfect fit for my busy work schedule and helps me set goals within designated lesson plans. The biggest advantage from blue house is the ability to practice pronunciation, overall speaking ability, and receive real feedback. It is hard to take the first steps into learning a new language but every class I have attended has made me feel comfortable with making mistakes/challenging to do better. It has been rewarding using new vocabulary or sentence structures learned throughout the course and applying it to daily life here in Japan. This is why the unique addition of the language exchange with other Japanese students at the end of each class is something I look forward to every time. On top of the in house learning, they have provided a structure that helps me study throughout the week as well. Given that learning Japanese can be very difficult to begin, this is very useful in creating a focus point and tracking progress made. As I have just completed my first course, I will be taking the next one and highly recommend for someone who wants the extra push to become more involved with learning Japanese language/culture while living in Okinawa.

Japanese That Fits Into Your Life

You do not need to turn Japanese into another big commitment.

Conversation Class gives you a place to keep learning and speaking, even when work, family, or everyday life makes it hard to study at home.

There is no required homework or pre-study before class.

Just come in and learn with us.

Learn Japanese You Can Actually Use

The class focuses on Japanese for situations you can imagine yourself in.

You might practice ordering at a restaurant, understanding what someone asks you at a convenience store, asking about business hours, shopping, using transportation, or talking about your day.

The Conversation Class materials include practical Japanese for situations you may actually experience while living in or traveling around Japan.

Hear It. Say It. Use It.

Conversation is not only about knowing what the words mean.

You also work on pronunciation and everyday expressions, so Japanese becomes something you can hear, say out loud, and begin using with other people.

Japanese for Everyday Situations

Conversation Class includes topics such as:

  • Greetings
  • Self-introduction
  • Countries, people, and languages
  • Occupations
  • Giving directions to a taxi driver
  • Places
  • Counting in yen
  • Ordering at a coffee shop
  • Ordering pizza on the phone
  • Convenience store phrases
  • Counting objects
  • Ordering at a restaurant
  • Avoiding ingredients and explaining allergies
  • Restaurant signs and Kanji
  • Shopping

  • Days and dates
  • Public transportation
  • Locations
  • Station phrases
  • Everyday expressions

You Don’t Have to Know What to Talk About

Some people hear “conversation class” and imagine walking into a room and being told:

“Okay, talk.”

That is not how this class works.

The lesson already gives you a situation and Japanese to work with, so you do not need to prepare a topic or invent a conversation before you arrive.

You can simply listen, practice, and give Japanese a try.

Take Japanese Out Into Okinawa

Something you practice in class may suddenly show up again in everyday life.

A phrase from class may sound familiar at a restaurant. You might recognize a question at a store, understand a little more of what someone says, or realize that you already know how to ask for something you need.

Those small moments are part of what makes learning Japanese in Okinawa fun.

Japanese starts feeling less like something you only study and more like something that is becoming part of your life here.

Move Beyond Simple Answers

At this level, the challenge is often not making one correct sentence.

It is connecting several thoughts together.

You may want to tell someone about a trip, explain why you made a decision, describe something that happened at work, compare two things, or share your opinion.

Intermediate gives you more ways to organize those ideas and express them in Japanese.

Is Intermediate the Right Level for You?

You do not have to guess which level comes next.

If you have studied Japanese before, take the online level check to see where your current Japanese fits.

Pre-Intermediate

Build longer everyday answers and learn to keep conversations going.

Intermediate

Explain experiences, reasons, opinions, comparisons, and more detailed ideas using stronger grammar and vocabulary.

JLPT

Choose JLPT Test Prep if your main goal is preparing specifically for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

See What You’ll Learn in Intermediate

Intermediate is divided into three stages.

If you have studied Japanese before, compare the topics, grammar, and examples below with what you already understand and use.

The goal is not only to learn more grammar.

As you move through Intermediate, you gain more ways to describe situations, explain reasons, compare choices, talk about experiences, and connect your ideas in greater detail.

Intermediate 1 expands the ways you can describe people, food, travel, experiences, and everyday situations.

You’ll practice 〜そうです for describing how something appears, 〜ので for giving reasons, and 〜たほうがいい / 〜ないほうがいい for giving advice.

You’ll also work with expressions such as 〜てから / 〜ないで, potential forms such as 〜られます, and 〜し〜し for connecting multiple reasons or characteristics.

Examples

彼女はやさしそうな人ですね。
She seems like a kind person.

私はアレルギーがあるので、えびとかにが食べられません。
I have allergies, so I can’t eat shrimp or crab.

ダイビングのどうぐは借りたほうがいいですか。
Is it better to rent diving equipment?

Intermediate 2 gives you more ways to talk about experiences, wishes, plans, work, events, shopping, and choices.

You’ll practice 〜たら for conditions, potential expressions such as 〜られます, and comparisons using 〜より〜のほうが.

You’ll also work with もう / まだ, 〜てしまいました, 〜にくい / 〜やすい, and 〜しか〜ません so you can describe limitations, completed actions, and how easy or difficult something is to do.

Examples

日本まつりのボランティアをしたいと思っています。
I’m thinking about volunteering at the Japan festival.

今年は休みが4日間しかなかったので、旅行には行きませんでした。
I only had four days off this year, so I didn’t go on a trip.

中が広くて、食べ物をとりだしやすいし、そうじもしやすいし、買ってよかったです。
It’s spacious inside, food is easy to take out, and it’s easy to clean, so I’m glad I bought it.

Intermediate 3 expands into topics such as history, culture, the environment, habits, changes, and personal experiences.

You’ll practice 〜ても and 〜ために, as well as expressions such as 〜ようにしています / 〜ないようにしています for talking about habits and things you make an effort to do or avoid.

You’ll also work with 〜てあります / 〜たまま, 〜かもしれません, and 〜ようになりました / 〜なくなりました for describing situations, possibilities, and changes over time.

Examples

日本の文化をもっと知るために、毎月10日と25日にセミナーがあります。
There are seminars on the 10th and 25th of every month to learn more about Japanese culture.

私はごみをへらすために、できるだけスーパーのふくろをもらわないようにしています。
To reduce waste, I try not to take plastic bags from the supermarket whenever possible.

大きい自転車を買ったので、小さいのがいらなくなりました。
I bought a larger bicycle, so I no longer need the smaller one.

Which Intermediate Level Feels Closest to You?

Intermediate 1 may be a useful starting point if expressions such as 〜そうです, 〜ので, 〜たほうがいい, or 〜し〜し still feel new.

Intermediate 2 may be closer if those feel comfortable but 〜たら, 〜てしまいました, 〜にくい / 〜やすい, or 〜しか〜ません are less familiar.

Intermediate 3 may be the better comparison when the earlier material feels comfortable but 〜ために, 〜ようにしています, 〜てあります, 〜かもしれません, or expressions for changes over time still need practice.

Already comfortable with most of these?

You may want to compare your goals with JLPT Test Prep or another Japanese class option.

Prepare Japanese About Your Own Life

Your learning continues between classes.

Study Room and Workbook activities give you time to work with new grammar and vocabulary before you use it in conversation.

You can connect what you are learning to your own experiences, opinions, plans, and everyday life.

That way, the Japanese you bring into class already has a reason to matter to you.

JP Class Study Room Quizzes

Check How You Want to Say It

In class, bring in what you studied and the parts you were not sure about.

You can check grammar, vocabulary, sentence connections, and pronunciation with your teacher, then practice saying your ideas out loud.

Sometimes the Japanese may be technically understandable but not quite express what you wanted to say.

Class gives you a place to notice that difference, adjust it, and try again.

The goal is not just a correct sentence. It is expressing what you actually mean.

Use More of Your Japanese in Real Conversations

Once you have practiced how to express an idea, take it into a real conversation.

Language Exchange gives you a chance to use your Japanese with Japanese students who are learning English too.

A real conversation may go in a direction you did not expect.

Someone may ask a follow-up question. You may need to explain something another way. You may hear a word you have never heard before.

Those moments give you a reason to use more of the Japanese you have been building.

See What Intermediate Study Looks Like

Not Sure What to Study Next?

If you can already handle everyday Japanese but still feel limited when you want to explain more, Intermediate may be the next step.

If you are still working on making everyday conversations longer, Pre-Intermediate may fit better.

If your main goal is practical speaking without following the full reading, writing, and grammar path, Conversation Class is another option.

If you are preparing specifically for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, JLPT Test Prep follows a different path.

You can take the online level check if you are not sure where your current Japanese fits.

When One-Word Answers Are Not Enough

Maybe you can already understand a simple question in Japanese.

Someone asks what food you like, what you did over the weekend, where you went, or what you do for work.

You know how to answer — but the conversation stops after one short sentence.

Pre-Intermediate helps you take the Japanese you already know and add more to it.

Instead of only answering the question, you begin learning how to explain, add details, respond, and keep the conversation moving.

Beginners, Pre-Intermediate, or Intermediate?

You do not have to start over just because you are new to Blue House.

If you already know basic Japanese, take the online level check to see where your current Japanese fits.

Beginners

Build the foundation: basic sentence patterns, vocabulary, Hiragana, Katakana, and essential grammar.

Pre-Intermediate

Build on that foundation and begin using more vocabulary, grammar, and connected sentences to talk about everyday topics.

Intermediate

Move beyond everyday answers and learn to explain your experiences, thoughts, reasons, and opinions in more detail.

See What You’ll Learn in Pre-Intermediate

Pre-Intermediate is divided into three stages.

Students who have studied Japanese before can compare the grammar, topics, and examples below with what they already understand and use.

You’ll expand your vocabulary and Kanji while talking about familiar topics such as family and relatives, hobbies, nature, seasons, weather, and your town.

You’ll practice 〜ている for ongoing actions or states, 〜とき for talking about when something happens, and なる for expressing changes.

You’ll also practice connecting verbs and adjectives so you can make longer descriptions and talk about familiar situations in more detail.

Examples

ひまなとき、こうえんで えをかきます。
In my free time, I draw pictures at the park.

今、雪がふっています。
It’s snowing now.

とてもにぎやかでたのしいです。
It’s very lively and fun.

Next, you’ll practice everyday situations such as meeting friends, making plans, going out, talking about meals, and sharing language-learning and cultural experiences.

You’ll work with 〜てもいいですか for checking whether something is okay, 〜たいです for saying what you want to do, and 〜てみます for trying something.

Expressions such as 〜のまえに / 〜のあとで, もう / まだ, 〜に行きます / 〜に来ます, and comparisons such as どちらがいいですか help you talk about plans, timing, purpose, and choices.

Examples

やけいのあとで飲みに行きませんか。
Would you like to go for a drink after seeing the night view?

私はおいしいものを食べに行きたいです。
I want to go eat something delicious.

私は大学のとき、ドイツ語を勉強しました。
I studied German when I was in college.

At this stage, the range of situations becomes wider, including business trips, the workplace, health and exercise, celebrations, and feelings.

You’ll practice 〜たことがあります for experiences, 〜すぎます for saying something is too much, and expressions such as 〜るといいです, 〜ないでください, and 〜たり〜たりしています.

You’ll also work with 〜と思います, 〜と言っていました, and giving and receiving expressions such as あげます / もらいます.

Examples

日本で会ったことがあります。
I have met them in Japan before.

お酒は飲みすぎないでください。
Please don’t drink too much alcohol.

よしださんはよく花をかざると言っていました。
Yoshida-san said that she often decorates with flowers.

Which Level Feels Closest to You?

Pre-Intermediate 1 may be a useful starting point when 〜ている, 〜とき, and なる still feel new.

Pre-Intermediate 2 may be closer when those feel comfortable but expressions such as 〜たいです, 〜てみます, もう / まだ, or before-and-after expressions are less familiar.

Pre-Intermediate 3 may be the better comparison when the earlier material feels comfortable but 〜たことがあります, 〜すぎます, 〜と思います, 〜と言っていました, or giving and receiving expressions still need practice.

Your learning continues between classes.

Study Room and Workbook activities help you review what you are learning and connect it to things you may actually want to talk about.

Instead of stopping with a model sentence from the textbook, you begin connecting the Japanese to your own life — your family, your interests, places you have been, things you have done, and what you think.

That gives you something meaningful to bring back into class.

JP Class Study Room Quizzes

Use Class Time to Check, Practice, and Speak

Bring what you studied at home into class.

You can ask questions, check grammar and vocabulary, work on pronunciation, and practice saying what you prepared out loud.

If something does not sound right, your teacher can help you find the problem and try it again.

The goal is not simply to complete the study materials.

The goal is to turn what you studied into Japanese you can actually say.

Take What You Practiced into a Real Conversation

Once you have studied something, checked it, and practiced saying it, the next step is to use it with another person.

Language Exchange gives you a chance to use the Japanese you are learning with Japanese students who are learning English too.

You may not understand every word of the answer you hear.

That is okay.

Listen for the Japanese you recognize, ask again when you need to, and see how far the conversation goes.

Ask a question. Listen to the answer. If you miss something, ask again.

Each real conversation can show you what you already know — and what you want to learn next.

Blue House Okinawa Japanese /English School Language Exchange 5

Hear from Students

Mr. Tom Nelson

I had spent about 8 months using online based methods to learn Japanese.
Blue House Okinawa gave me the opportunity to learn Japanese face-to-face with native Japanese speakers.
The language exchanges forced me to step outside of my shell and speak among our Japanese peers, which was exactly what I needed to do to gain confidence to apply my classroom learning to the real world. Most importantly, it has been an incredibly fun experience to learn Japanese while helping others to learn English!

Not Sure Which Direction to Take?

If you already know some Japanese but are unsure whether Pre-Intermediate is the right level, you do not have to guess.

Take the online level check and see what matches what you already know.

If your main goal is practical speaking without following the full reading, writing, and grammar path, Conversation Class is another option.

If you are ready to express experiences, reasons, and opinions in more detail, Intermediate may be the next step.

If you are preparing specifically for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, you can also look at JLPT Test Prep.

Ready to Continue Your Japanese?

You have already started learning Japanese.

Pre-Intermediate helps you take that foundation and do more with it — say more, understand more, and keep a conversation going a little longer.

What you study at home comes into class.

What you practice in class can go into real conversations.

And little by little, the Japanese you already know becomes Japanese you can actually use.

Not sure which level is right for you?

Start with the Basics — Then See What You Can Do

Your first lessons begin with pronunciation, counting, greetings, and useful everyday expressions.

From there, you’ll start building simple sentences, adding vocabulary, and learning Hiragana little by little.

Japanese may look completely unfamiliar at first, but you do not have to learn everything at once.

You build it one step at a time.

Imagine Being Able to Say:

I’m Lisa.
Lisa to mōshimasu.

I like curry.
Karē ga suki desu.

Please say it again.
Mō ichido itte kudasai.

Please speak more slowly.
Motto yukkuri itte kudasai.

They are simple sentences, but they are the beginning of actually using Japanese.

Choose the Way You Want to Start

If you are starting from zero, Beginners 1 is your first course.

Beginners 1 is available in three different ways:

  • Lecture
  • Intensive-Lecture
  • Self-Paced

Choose the one that fits how much time you have and how you want to learn.

Lecture

Want a regular schedule and a clear class rhythm?

Lecture meets twice a week for two months. You move through Beginners 1 together on a fixed schedule with your instructor and classmates.

Intensive-Lecture

Want to focus on Japanese for a shorter period of time?

Intensive-Lecture meets four times a week for one month, giving you a more concentrated way to complete Beginners 1.

Self-Paced

Prefer to move through the Beginners curriculum according to your own progress?

With Self-Paced, you work through structured Japanese course material at your own pace while still receiving instructor support in class.

After Beginners 1

Beginners 2, Beginners 3, and Beginners 4 are available through Self-Paced only.

After completing Beginners 1 — or if you already know the Beginners 1 material — you can continue through Beginners 2–4 at your own pace with instructor support.

This means you do not need to wait for a new Beginners group class before moving on to the next level.

Which Beginners Level Feels Closest to You?

Beginners 1 may be the right place if pronunciation, Hiragana, basic questions, particles, adjectives, or simple sentence structure still feel new.

Beginners 2 may be closer if those basics feel comfortable but dates, time, counters, past tense, or verb sentences are less familiar.

Beginners 3 may fit when the earlier material feels comfortable but ある / いる, location expressions, more particles, invitations, or Katakana still need practice.

Beginners 4 may be the better comparison when you are comfortable with the earlier material but informal verb forms, た-form, から, する, or connected sentences still feel new.

Already comfortable with most of Beginners 4?

You may be ready to compare Pre-Intermediate.

Learn at Home. Bring It to Life in Class.

Beginners learning continues between lessons.

Study Room and Workbook activities help you review what you are learning, practice it, and notice the parts you still want to check.

Then bring that Japanese back into class.

Ask. Check. Say It Out Loud.

Class gives you time to ask questions, check what you studied, work on pronunciation, and actually say the Japanese out loud.

Your teacher can help you notice what went wrong, correct it, and try again.

Mistakes are part of learning a language.

You are not expected to get everything right the first time.

Start Making Japanese Part of Your Life

As the basics begin to connect, Japanese becomes more than something you see in a textbook.

You start recognizing words, understanding simple questions, introducing yourself, saying what you like, and knowing what to say when you need someone to repeat something.

Those little moments can feel surprisingly exciting when you are starting from zero.

Something that looked completely unfamiliar begins to make sense.

Hear from Students

Ms. Sara Wray

I remember my first class at Blue House Okinawa!
I was brand new to Okinawa and the Japanese language.
I was able to have basic exchanges, and it made me so happy to practice with native speakers and have such a fun community to learn in.
I’m two years into studying now and am so glad I found Blue House Okinawa from the beginning — it introduced me to some of my favorite people in Okinawa and is such a special place ❤️
A few points:
1. This is not a traditional school — they utilize the “flipped classroom” and “blended learning” models (if not familiar, google those terms. They’re interesting!). Independent learners thrive here!
2. Since this is both an English & Japanese language school, I love that there are opportunities to both learn Japanese and help others learn English through Blue House’s conversational exchange club, read aloud club, and public speaking practice in our target language.

If you’re someone who takes initiative, there are so many real-life practice opportunities and study buddies here!
Beyond language-learning, I’ve loved the extra curriculars (trips, hikes, karaoke, BBQs, field trips).
It’s a wonderful group of people making a community learning program come to life!
It’s really made my time in Okinawa extra adventurous and interesting!

Turn What You Study Into Japanese You Can Actually Use

Have you ever understood the Japanese while you were studying, then gone blank when you tried to use it later?

That can happen even when the lesson made sense. Seeing an answer and being able to remember it, make it about your own life, and actually say it to someone are not quite the same thing.

That is why we give you different ways to work with the Japanese you are learning before you take it into a real conversation.

You Need to:

Learn it. Recall it. Make it yours. Check it. Use it.

On This Page

Blue House Okinawa English Class

From Learning to Using

Knowing Japanese when the answer is in front of you and being able to bring it back on your own are two different things.

The first time you meet new Japanese, most of your attention goes to understanding it. That is important, but understanding is only the beginning. To use Japanese in a real conversation, you also need chances to remember it without looking, connect it to your own life, check it, and try it with another person.

The goal is not simply to recognize the answer. It is to be able to bring the Japanese back when you need it.

Learn It

Start with new vocabulary, grammar, and expressions.

First, understand what you are learning and give yourself something to work with. You cannot recall or use Japanese that you have not had a chance to understand first.

Recall It

Then take the answer away.

Can you remember the word, expression, or sentence pattern without looking?

Maybe not all of it. That’s okay. Try bringing it back from memory instead of only recognizing it on the page or screen.

Make It Yours

Now connect it to your own life.

Maybe the textbook asks what someone did over the weekend. What did you do over the weekend?

A model sentence can become a question about your work, your family, your plans, or something you genuinely want to know about the person in front of you. The grammar is still the lesson. The reason to use it becomes yours.

Check It

Then comes the question many learners have:

“Is this actually right?”

Check the grammar and pronunciation. Say it out loud. Get feedback. Try it again.

You are not expected to get everything right the first time. Checking gives you a chance to notice what still feels unclear before you depend on it in a real conversation.

Use It

Finally, try using it with another person.

A real answer may not sound like the one you practiced. You may forget a word, misunderstand part of the reply, or need to ask again. That is part of what makes the conversation useful.

Sometimes the most useful result is not, “I said it perfectly.” It is, “Now I know what I need next.”

Use Japanese, notice what happens, and bring the next question back into your learning.

Input is not the finish line. Each stage prepares the next one.

Everything You Need

Blue House Okinawa connects the steps above so the Japanese you study has somewhere to go.

We kept asking the same question: What should happen before a student is asked to speak?

For classes that include home study, we moved more of the reviewing and preparation outside the classroom so class time could be used for questions, pronunciation, practice, feedback, and speaking.

We did not add online tools just to make the class more digital. We added them to make more room for practice.

The tools are not the destination. They prepare you for what comes next.

Textbook — Learn It

Your textbook introduces the vocabulary, grammar, expressions, and activities for each lesson.

It gives you the new Japanese you will keep working with as you review, prepare, practice, and eventually use it.

beginners1-japanese-class-textbook

Study Room — Recall It

The Study Room is Blue House Okinawa’s online learning space. You can review vocabulary and expressions from your lesson with Flashcards with Audio and Quizzes.

The point is not only to recognize an answer when you see it. You practice bringing the Japanese back from memory so it is easier to recall later when you actually need it.

JP Class Study Room Flashcards

Workbook — Make It Yours

The Workbook helps you take the grammar and vocabulary from your lesson and connect it to your own life.

Instead of asking only, “What should I study?” you can begin asking, “What do I want to be able to say or understand next?”

Use what you study to prepare questions and answers about your work, weekend, family, interests, plans, and experiences. Preparation gives you something specific to ask, answer, check, or try in class.

The point of preparation is to give your next conversation something to start with.

JP Class Study Room Flashcards

Bring It Back to Class — Check It and Practice It

In class, you bring that Japanese with you.

Each lesson has two parts.

In the first half of the lesson, you work with your instructor. Ask the questions that came up while you were studying, check the wording, check your grammar and pronunciation, say what you prepared out loud, get feedback, and try again.

This first part gives you time to clarify and practice the Japanese before you use it with another person.

Then, in the second half of the lesson, the class moves into Language Exchange.

At Home

  • Review
  • Repeat
  • Recall
  • Prepare

First Half of the Lesson

  • Ask questions
  • Check what you studied
  • Practice pronunciation
  • Say Japanese out loud
  • Get feedback
  • Try again

Second Half of the Lesson

  • Language Exchange
  • Use the Japanese you practiced
  • Listen to a real answer
  • Respond
  • Notice what you can do and what you want to work on next

Language Exchange — Use It

A teacher can help you check the Japanese, but a real conversation shows you what happens when the answer is not the one you practiced.

In the second half of the lesson, Language Exchange gives you a place to take some of the Japanese you studied and practiced and try using it with another person.

Ask a question. Listen to the answer. If you miss something, ask again.

“Mou ichido itte kudasai.” — “One more time, please.”

You might understand the whole answer, or you might catch only a few words. Sometimes catching one more word the second time is enough to keep the conversation going.

A real answer may be different from the answer you practiced. That is part of the learning.

Every Conversation Gives You Something to Bring Back

Maybe you hear a new word or realize you need more listening practice.

Or maybe you discover something encouraging: you understood more than you thought you would, or you managed to say something even though it was not perfect.

Either way, the conversation shows you something you can take back into your Japanese study.

Learn it. Recall it. Make it yours. Check it. Use it. Notice what happens. Then keep building.

What One of Our Students Says

Mr. Hayes Joyner

Find the Japanese Class That Fits You

Now the next question is:

What do you want to be able to do with your Japanese?

Maybe you are starting from zero. Maybe you already know some Japanese and want to say more.

Maybe speaking is your priority, or you have a specific goal such as the JLPT.

Beginners, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Conversation, and JLPT give you different places to start.

Ready to Start Using Your Japanese?

At first, even a simple sentence can take a lot of effort.

Then one day, you remember it without looking. Later, you make your own sentence.

You ask someone a question, and they answer you.

Maybe you understand everything. Maybe you only understand part of it. Maybe you make a mistake and try again.

That still counts.

You do not have to wait until your Japanese is perfect.

Start with what you know, keep building from there, and see what you can do.
