Japanese Class Curriculum

Speaking Training

There is a significant difference in most language instruction programs concerning the number of hours students spend practicing reading/writing skills versus listening/speaking skills.

The primary cause for this is most likely due to the lack of class time that can be feasibly spent on meaningful conversation exchanges.

Thus, the most logical answer is to have students practice outside the classroom. However, the transition from in-class learning to out-of-class practice is often not a very successful one.

To address this deficiency and present possible options for creating successful learning environments beyond the classroom.  Put simply, there is just not enough time for each student to participate in a meaningful conversation within class due to schedule limitations, resulting in a need for students to often practice outside of class.

Our classes offer a great opportunity to broaden your knowledge of Okinawa and Japan, you will understand how Japanese people think, feel, and express themselves.

Our Exchange Program

We also offer the opportunity for our English and Japanese students to interact,  in our “Exchange Classes”.

Our language exchange takes students who speak different languages and engages them in practicing each other's language.

In a language exchange you practice more than you would in a class, talking with native speakers of the language you're learning, in a relaxed and supportive environment where there is patience and time to understand.

A language exchange is also a wonderful way to learn the real spoken language of the culture, with all its "modern" grammar, informal expressions and slang.

Our language exchange is a fantastic way to bridge the gap between classroom learning and communicating in the real world!

When learning to speak another language you need the right kind of practice - and lots of it!

Learn fast and smart

At Blue House Okinawa we use a modern teaching technique called “Flipped Classroom”, where greater student interaction is encouraged and a focus on enjoyment over grades is emphasised.

It is a type of blended learning that reverses the traditional learning environment by delivering instructional content, often online, outside of the classroom and it moves activities, including those that have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom.

In a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home and engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance of one of our teachers.

In traditional classes and lectures, students are bound to the pace that the instructor sets for the course.

By contrast, in flipped classrooms, students can review and replay any parts of the lecture or class that they’re having trouble with as many times as they need.

If students continue to have issues, they are able to come to class prepared to ask specific questions about the concepts that give them pause.

Last but not least, students who are absent due to work, illness, or any other reason, can catch up with their peers faster and easier with the flipped classroom model than with the standard one.

Learning Materials

Blue House Okinawa uses a fun resource called Quizlet where you can study vocabulary and phrases, practice your writing and listening, and even take tests using online “flashcards”.

Quizlet is the easiest way to practice and master what you are learning, more than 95% of students who learn with Quizlet improved their grades.

Each “flash-card” lesson has a quiz at the end of the lesson that our instructors review in order to know what your strengths are and what you may need to improve on.

For students, please read through these articles to understand how to use it on both of your phone and computer.

the Real Conversation Practice

One of our favorite and most convenient tools used at Blue House is the Slack App.

This free App can be downloaded on both your phone and computer and is a perfect way to communicate with your classmates and teachers at any time and from anywhere.

Perfect for the soldier on temporary duty travel, or if you have to miss a class due to work, sickness, emergency, etc.

You can message your fellow classmates or teachers about any assignments or lessons you may have missed, and you will never feel out of the loop because of a missed class.

Slack is such a beneficial part of our program because it gives our students the means to practice Japanese with each other  outside of class.

It’s also a great way to get to know and chat with your classmates to find out which festivals they love to attend, about the best places to eat, or get recommendations for the best hiking spots in Okinawa!

Experience the real Okinawa

The best way to learn Japanese is to immerse yourself in both the language and the culture of Japan. To maximize this experience, our exchange sessions will let Japanese learners can meet and interact with locals.

The exchange sessions is between our Japanese learners and local Japanese residents who are studying English in the classroom next to ours.

It's a great opportunity for Japanese learners to build relationships with local Japanese and make real connections with them.
